A lady of the court, Marie de Medici as a widow, and a gentleman, c1620 (1882-1884). Marie de Medici married King Henry IV of France in 1600. After Henry was assassinated in 1610, their eight year-old son, Louis XIII became king, but Marie ruled as regent until he reached the age of thirteen, and continued to be de facto ruler of France until Louis asserted his authority in 1617, exiling her to the Chateau of Blois.
