John Hampden, 17th century English politician and soldier, (c1850). Hampden (1594-1643) was an English Parliamentary leader who opposed King Charles I over ship money, an episode in the controversies that ultimately led to the English Civil Wars. He was fatally wounded fighting on the Parliamentarian side in a skirmish at Chalgrove Field in Oxfordshire on 18 June 1643. Taken from the book Old Englands Worthies, London, c1850
