John Bull guards his Pudding, 1859

John Bull guards his Pudding, 1859. John Bull stands guard over a gigantic pudding studded with the sign saying Old England Forever. This representative of the British people is prepared to defend his country whatever the cost, just as the trusty British bulldog at his heels would fight to the death to protect his master. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 31, 1859
