John Barrow (1764-1848), English traveller and naval administrator. Between 1804-1845 Barrow held the position of second secretary to the Admiralty. He promoted the Arctic expeditions of John Ross, James Clark Ross, and John Franklin, all of whom tried, and failed, to find the Northwest Passage around the top of North America to the Pacific. Barrow was one of the founders of the (Royal) Geographical Society in 1830
