Looking for Admiral Byng, 1897. British admiral John John Byng (1704-1757) was shot on board the Monarque, at Spithead, for Misbehaviour before the French Fleet in the Mediterranean. He was court-martialled and executed for failing to do his utmost during the Battle of Minorca.
