Interior of St. Marys New Church, Herne Hill, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Interior of St. Marys New Church, Herne Hill, 1844. Church in south London: This highly-embellished structure (from the designs of Messrs. Stevens and Alexander)has just been completed...The principal passages and the chancel are paved with encaustic tiles of various colours...The whole of the tile and porcelain work is the gilt of Mr. Garrett, of the firm of Copeland and Garrett, of Lincoln s-inn-fields.The tile work is a very fine specimen of art, and is the first of the kind ever executed...The whole of the ceiling is divided into panels, by moulded beams and Gothic tracery. After the ancient manner, the beams are decorated with scriptural texts, in illuminated characters; and the panels of the ceiling are painted with elaborate designs of Gothic character.
