HMS 'Iron Duke', British battleship, c1936-c1937. Launched in 1912, HMS 'Iron Duke' was named in honour of the Duke of Wellington. She was the flagship of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. By the time of this photograph 'Iron Duke' had been disarmed under the terms of the 1930 London Naval Treaty and was serving as a gunnery training vessel. In the Second World War she served as a base ship at the naval base at Scapa Flow, Orkney. She was scrapped in Glasgow in 1948.

Receipt for a ex-Japanese sword, HMS 'Venerable', Singapore, 1946. Confirmation that AB Stevens, a member of the crew of the British aircraft carrier HMS 'Venerable', had been issued with the sword as a souvenir. The document bears the commanding officer's stamp and is signed by Lieutenant Julian Richards.

Short Empire flying boat 'Corinthian', Alexandria, Egypt, c1938-c1941. 42 Empire class flying boats were built by Short Brothers at their factory in Rochester, Kent, the first flying in 1936. Operated by Imperial Airways, then BOAC, they carried passengers and mail between Britain and its colonies in Asia, Africa and Australasia. 'Corinthian' entered service in 1937. The plane crashed at Darwin, Australia, on 22 March 1942 with two fatalities.
