Lord Melbourne, British statesman, (1886). William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne (1779-1848) served as Prime Minister in 1834 and 1835-1841. A mentor to Queen Victoria, his most lasting memorial is the city of Melbourne, Australia, which was named after him in 1837. Batman Treating with the Blacks, 1835, (1886). John Batman (1801-1839) was an Australian farmer and businessman and is considered one of the founders of the city of Melbourne. In 1835 he signed a treaty with aboriginal members of Dutigalla, a band of the Wurundjeri tribe of Port Phillip.
