Sheikh AliIslam Urguplu Hayri Bey, the supreme religious authority in the Ottoman Empire, issues a fatwa declaring an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government. In it he urges his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro in the First World War.
