Hobart Pasha, Marshal of the Ottoman Empire, 1882. The third son of the Earl of Buckinghamshire, Augustus Charles Hobart-Hampden (1822-1886) served in the Royal Navy from 1835-1862. After his retirement from the Navy he commanded a successful blockade-runner in the American Civil War before entering the service of the Ottoman Empire in 1867. He served with great distinction as commander of the Turkish fleet and was awarded the title of Pasha by the Sultan in 1869, and was made a Mushir, or Marshal, in 1881, the first Christian to attain the rank in the Ottoman Empire.
