HMS Calliope, Royal Navy 3rd class cruiser, c1890-c1893

HMS Calliope, Royal Navy 3rd class cruiser, c1890-c1893. A Calypso class cruiser, HMS Calliope entered service in 1887. In 1889 she survived an encounter with a tropical cyclone at Apia, Samoa, that wrecked or sank all twelve other ships present at the time. Calliope was placed in reserve in 1889 and, after a short period as a training ship, in 1907 became a drill ship for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the Tyne at Newecastle, a role she would perform until 1951. A print from Her Majestys Navy Including its Deeds and Battles, by Lieut Chas Rathbone Low, Volume I, JS Virtue & Co, London, 1890-1893
