On 6 August 1945, a United States Air Force B-29 bomber, codenamed Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Some 80, 000 people were killed immediately and a further 60, 000 died later from radiation sickness and other after effects. The utter devastation of the city is clearly visible in this photograph.
