Headdresses, early 16th century, (1843). Artist: Henry Shaw
Headdresses, early 16th century, (1843). The caul, under which the hair is gathered in the first two of these figures, was popular in the reign of Henry VII. The band on the fourth head ornamented with jewellery, is a templette. The third figure is said to be a portrait of either of Anne of Bretagne, wife of Francis I of France who ruled 1515-1547, or of his first wife, Claude de France. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843)
