Golden Temple, Amritsar, Punjab, India, c1930s. The Golden Temple at Amritsar is the principal shrine of the Sikh religion. The temple was built between 1588 and 1601, during the time of the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Anjan. The temple was the site of a massacre in 1984 when the Indian Army launched Operation Blue Star to apprehend Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the leader of a Sikh group suspected of involvement in terrorist activities who had taken refuge there.
