George Herbert at Bemerton, Salisbury, 1860, (c1902). After a painting in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London. George Herbert (1593-1633), religious poet, orator and priest, in his rectory garden by the river Nadder in Wiltshire. The lute in the background refers to his skills as a lutenist. Izaak Walton, author of The Compleat Angler (1653), was Herberts first biographer, indicated by the fishing tackle by a tree. In the distance is the spire of Salisbury Cathedral.
