General Winfield Scott, United States Army general, diplomat, and presidential candidate, 1862-1867
General Winfield Scott, United States Army general, diplomat, and presidential candidate, 1862-1867. Scott (1786-1866) played a major role in the Mexican War (1846-1848) and ran for the presidency in 1852. He was General-in-Chief of the US Army when the American Civil War broke out in 1861. His age dictated that he was physically unable to command in the field and on 1 November 1861 he resigned and was replaced by George B McClellan. An engraving from volume II of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867
