General view of an Alum works in the Whitby area, Yorkshire, 1814. Steeping crumbled ore in water in pits to dissolve out salts which will be processed to produce alum. Alum, which is used in the tanning and dyeing industries, was extensively quarried on the North Yorkshire coast from the early 17th century until around 1870, with dramatic effects on the areas landscape which are still clearly visible today.
