The Arch of Titus, Rome, Italy, 1882

The Arch of Titus, Rome, Italy, 1882. The Arch of Titus is a Pentelic marble triumphal arch with a single arched opening, located on the Via Sacra just to the south-east of the Forum in Rome. It was constructed by the emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus, commemorating the capture and sack of Jerusalem in AD 70, which effectively terminated the Jewish War begun in AD 66. From Florence, by Charles Yriarte, translated by CB Pitman and published by Sampson Low (London, 1882)

Hadrians Arch, Athens, Greece, c1920s-c1930s(?) Featured Image

Hadrians Arch, Athens, Greece, c1920s-c1930s(?)

Hadrian's Arch, Athens, Greece, c1920s-c1930s(?). Athens became part of the Roman Empire in 146 BC. Built in the 2nd century AD, the Arch of Hadrian is a monumental gateway resembling a Roman triumphal arch. It has been proposed that the arch was built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and to honour him for his many benefactions to the city. It is not certain who commissioned the arch, although it is probable that the citizens of Athens or another Greek group were responsible for its construction and design
