Charles Bradlaugh...Claiming the Right to Make the Affirmation of Allegiance..., 1880, (1901)

Charles Bradlaugh, at the Bar of the House of Commons, Claiming the Right to Make the Affirmation of Allegiance instead of taking the Oath, 1880, (1901). British free-thinker, political activist, atheist and social reformer Charles Bradlaugh (1833-1891) was elected MP for Northampton in 1880, but refused to take the oath as he was not a Christian, and was expelled from Parliament. He was re-elected and continued to be rejected until 1886 when he finally took the oath. Having taken up his seat, Bradlaugh spoke in favour of Irish Home Rule and land redistribution. He founded the National Secular Society in 1866. From "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra". [London, 1901]

Sir Edwin Chadwick, British physician and social reformer, 19th century (1956) Featured Print

Sir Edwin Chadwick, British physician and social reformer, 19th century (1956)

Sir Edwin Chadwick, British social reformer, 19th century (1956). Chadwick (1800-1890) was largely responsible for devising the system under which the country was divided into groups of parishes administered by elected boards, each with its own medical officer. Later, as commissioner of the Board of Health (1848-1854), he conducted a campaign that resulted in the passing of the Public Health Act of 1848. This legislation embodied Chadwick's belief that public health should be administered locally to encourage people to participate in their own protection. A print from People, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956

William Wilberforce, philanthropist, evangelical Christian and anti-slavery campaigner, 1821

William Wilberforce, English philanthropist, evangelical Christian and anti-slavery campaigner, 1821. Entering Parliament in 1780, Wilberforce (1759-1833) campaigned tirelessly for the abolition of slavery. His efforts contributed to a bill being passed in 1807 outlawing slavery in the British West Indies, and in 1833, a month after his death, the Abolition of Slavery Act was passed by Parliament. Wilberforce also campaigned on other issues, including penal reform and help for the destitute. From The Royal Exile; or, Memoirs of Queen Caroline by John Adolphus. (London, 1821)
