Bishop Fisher, (1909). Saint John Fisher, English Catholic bishop, cardinal and martyr (1469-1535), protested against King Henry VIII's intention to divorce Catherine of Aragon, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In May 1535, he was accused of the treasonous act of refusing to accept Henry as head of the church, and was beheaded on June 25. Fisher was canonised in 1935. Richard II, c1390, (1909). The reign of Richard II (1367-1400) began in 1377 and was characterised by intermittent periods of tension between the king and the barons. In 1399 he was captured at Flint Castle in Wales before being taken to the Tower of London where he was forced to abdicate by Henry Bolingbroke, who declared himself King Henry IV. Richard was then imprisoned in Pontefract Castle where he either starved to death or was murdered early in 1400. After a painting in the collection of the Westminster Abbey, London.
