Untitled ("I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance"), 1864/65. Creator: S. C

Untitled ("I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance"), 1864/65. [Portrait of Sojourner Truth, born Isabella "Belle" Baumfree (c. 1797-1883), African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in upstate New York, but escaped with her infant daughter in 1826. She copyrighted her own image, allowing the activist who had herself once been sold as property, to profit from the sale of her photograph. Here she holds a piece of knitting. The printed caption alludes to one of photography's early slogans: "Secure the shadow [the photograph] ere the substance [body] fade"]. Albumen print

Print of Frederick Douglass, ca. 1879. Creator: Unknown

A lithographic print of African-American diplomat, abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) who escaped from slavery in Maryland aged 21. He became a national leader of the abolitionist movement. Famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings, he was described by abolitionists as a living counterexample to slaveholders arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. The print is hand colored. Douglass is sitting at a desk and reading a newspaper. His right leg is crossed over his left and he is looking to his right. At the bottom underneath the image is "No. 7.--Our Artistic Correspondent interviewing Frederick Douglass in the District Marshal's (sic) Office, Washington, D.C.." and "Illustrated Interviews with Eminent Public Men on Leading Topics of the Day.--see Page 258, 1879." The print is matted and framed

Carte-de-visite portrait of Harriet Tubman, 1868-1869. Creator: Benjamin F. Powelson

African-American anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman (c1820-1913) was born into slavery in Maryland. She escaped in 1849, became a leading Abolitionist and was active as a conductor in the Underground Railroad, the network which helped escaped slaves to reach safety. She is positioned slightly turned to the right and gazes off camera. Her right hand rests on the back of a wooden chair and her left hand rests in her lap. A patterned carpet covers the floor and the wall or drop behind her is a blank light color. Tubman wears a black bodice that buttons at the center front and has dropped sleeves with heavy ruching and ruffled details on the sleeves. There is a panel of lighter fabric around the yoke, with the upper neck the same dark color as the body of the bodice. A white lace collar with short tails is crossed and pinned at the front of her neck. Her hair is parted at the center and gathered at the nape of her neck. Tubman's full skirt is made from a light and dark patterned gingham check. It drapes slightly on the floor and hides her feet completely. The text "Harriet Tubman" is handwritten in graphite across the bottom of her skirt. The print is mounted on card stock and a double-lined red border is printed around the front edges of the card framing the print
