Tilly in Rothenburg, 1631, (1936). Woman pleading with Count Tilly in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Catholic commander Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly (1559-1632) wanted to burn the city of Rothenburg, and condemned the city councilmen to death. The councillors, in an effort to appease him, offered him wine in a large cup. Tilly challenged anyone to drink all the wine in one go, and promised that if it was done he would spare the city. The mayor, Georg Nusch, succeeded in emptying the cup and so saved his city. The events have been commemorated annually since 1881 in the play "Der Meistertrunk" (The Master Draught). The sleeping Ziethen, (1936). Der Schlafende Ziethen'. Cavalry officer Ziethen sleeps at the table of Frederick the Great. Hans Joachim von Zieten (1699-1786) also known as Zieten aus dem Busch, was a cavalry general in the Prussian Army. He served in four wars and was instrumental in several victories during the reign of King Frederick the Great of Prussia (1712-1786), most particularly at Hohenfriedberg and Torgau. When he allegedly fell asleep at the table, Frederick told the other guests to let Ziethen sleep as he had done so much for his country. Yorck's meeting with the Russian General Diebitsch, 25 December 1812, (1936). Verhandlung Yorcks Mit Dem Russischen General Diebitsch, 25 Dezember 1812'. Prussian general Johann David Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg (1759-1830) negotiates with Count Ivan Ivanovich Diebitsch-Zabalkansky (1785-1831). On 30 December, Yorck signed the Convention of Tauroggen (at Tauroggen, now Taurage, Lithuania), declaring his troops neutral. The agreement effectively ended the fragile Franco-Prussian alliance during the French invasion of Russia.
