Alexander II, Tsar of Russia, (1900). Alexander (1818-1881) was Emperor of Russia from 1855. Known as The Liberator, he emancipated Russia's serfs in 1861. The pace of reform under Alexander's rule was too slow for some, however, and on 13 March 1881 he was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a nihilist student. The coronation of Emperor Alexander II (1818-1881) and Empress Maria Alexandrovna (1824-1880) took place on 7 September 1856 at the Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. Born Princess Charlotte of Prussia, Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860) was the widow of Tsar Nicholas I and the mother of Alexander II. Found in the collection of the State Museum of History, Moscow
