Looking down on the island of Philae and its temples, Egypt, 1905.Artist: Underwood & Underwood

Looking down on the island of Philae and its temples, Egypt, 1905. Over on the right is the square kiosk which the natives call Pharaoh's Bed; it has no roof and never was finished, but it is one of the gems of the palace. It dates back from the Roman age. The building with the large pylon is the lsis temple. That little obelisk is one of a pair - the other has been carried to England. They were created in the time of Ptolemy IX (about 557 BC) and are of especial interest because the one now in England was the monument which enabled Champollion to take the first steps in his decipherment of the hieroglyphic, before he employed the Rosetta stone. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

Corona panel designed for NMAAHC (Type A: 65% opacity), ca. 2013 Featured Print

Corona panel designed for NMAAHC (Type A: 65% opacity), ca. 2013

An openwork cast aluminum panel of the type used to fabricate the cladding that covers the exterior of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The panel's bronze color is the final finish, and is the same as the color of the panels installed on the NMAAHC building. Panels were constructed in differing levels of opacity or thickness, in order to regulate the amount of light that enters the building. Panels with varying levels of opacity are used on each side of the building. This panel is the Type A design, with an opacity or density of 65% (35% open). The panel sometimes is referred to as a "corona panel," because these panels encapsulate the stacked upper levels of the building's design, referred to as the "corona" levels by the architects. The stacked shape of the building itself was designed to relfect the stacked top portions of Yoruba carved wood columns by Olowe of Ise found on traditional buildings in Nigeria. This top portion is known as a "capital" in architectural vocabulary, and the architects also use the words "crown" and "corona" to refer to the design inspiration they gained from this top portion of Yoruba column. This panel was fabricated at the same time as the panels installed on the building

Wooden drum used on the Sea Islands, South Carolina, 19th century. Creator: Unknown Featured Print

Wooden drum used on the Sea Islands, South Carolina, 19th century. Creator: Unknown

A wooden drum covered with stretched leather hide that has been attached to drum body with nine wooden pegs. Two carved, anthropomorphized face motifs are on opposite sides of the upper half of the drum body. The edges of face motifs have been sealed with a darker adhesive material. There are three bands running the circumference of the drum. The top band closest to the drum head, is stained darker than the rest of the drum body. There is a carved piece that extends from the darker band. It has a round drill hole that had been threaded through with a leather thong. This piece has been stained the same color as the bank. The middle band is directly below the top band and above the face motifs. It is the same color as the rest of the body. The bottom band is a carved triangular pattern between two parallel lines. The bottom band is located near the base of the drum, above a piece of hide wrapped and tied around the very bottom of the drum body. There is a nail visible in drum body interior
