Frederick Richard Pickersgill, artist and Royal Academician, 1882. Pickersgill (1820-1900) was a painter of historical subjects as well as scenes from art and literature, contemporary life and the Bible. He became a Royal Academician in 1850, the year in which he painted the work generally regarded as his masterpiece, Samson Betrayed. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
