Frederick I, Barbarossa (Redbeard) (c1123-1190), Holy Roman Emperor, 19th century. Frederick, Duke of Swabia, succeeded his uncle Conrad III as Holy Roman Emperor in 1152. He fought several wars in Italy against forces loyal to the Pope in an unsuccessful attempt to re-establish imperial control. In 1189 Frederick joined the Third Crusade, and was drowned attempting to cross a river in Anatolia
