Festival of Reason, Paris, 1793 (1882-1884)
Festival of Reason, Paris, 1793 (1882-1884). The Festival of Reason was staged on 10th November (20 Brumaire) 1793, with ceremonies devised and organised by Pierre-Gaspard Chaumette, a revolutionary politician who believed that Christianity was indistinguishable from counter-revolution. The Cult of Reason centered upon a young woman designated the Goddess of Reason. The following year Chaumette became one of the many victims of Maximilien Robespierres Reign of Terror.
