Execution of Lord Derwentwater on Tower Hill (From an Old Print), 24 February 1716, (c1880). James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater (1689-1716) was an English Jacobite who joined the conspiracy of 1715. He was captured and examined before the privy council on 10 January 1716, impeached with other lords on 19 January he pleaded guilty, urging in extenuation his inexperience but was executed for treason. On the scaffold of his beheading on Tower Hill 24 February 1716, he expressed regret at having pleaded guilty, and declared his devotion to his Roman Catholic religion and to James III.
