Execution of conspirators at Amboise, French Religious Wars, March 1560 (1570). Artist: Jacques Tortorel
Execution of conspirators at Amboise, French Religious Wars, March 1560 (1570). Execution by hanging or decapitation by the sword of conspirators in the Amboise Enterprise, a Huguenot plot against the Catholic Guise faction. The plot was led by Jean du Barry, Seigneur de la Renaudie (d1560), whose body swings on a gibbet in front of the tower in the centre of the picture. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights
