Entrance to a Sap along the French Front, First World War, 1915, (c1920). The mine subsequently exploded in this sap killed a great number of Germans. A sap was a covered trench, dug by sappers, often experienced civilian miners. These trench were filled with explosives and detonated, followed by an attack on the surprised survivors from the destroyed position.
