Edward Winslows visit to Massasoit, 17th century (c1880)
Edward Winslows visit to Massasoit, 17th century (c1880). Winslow (1595-1655) was one of the Pilgrim Fathers who arrived aboard the Mayflower in 1620 to establish the colony of New Plymouth in Massachusetts. Massasoit was the sachem (chief) of the Native American Pokanoket tribe, and leader of a tribal grouping known as the Wampanoag Confederacy. Winslow was charged with treating with the local natives and established friendly relations with Massasoit, which assisted the colonists in avoiding starvation in the difficult early years of their time in America.
