Edward Vernon, English naval officer, (19th century). Vernon (1684-1757) was nicknamed Old Grog because of the grogram coat he wore. Grogram is a type of coarse fabric, made of silk mixed with wool or or mohair. Vernon ordered that sailors rum be diluted with water. This was then called grog after Vernons nickname
