A historical painter, Armitage was influential in the movements for the restoration of fresco painting in England, and the decoration of the Houses of Parliament with historical designs. He became a Royal Academician in 1872, and became the Academys professor and lecturer on painting in 1875. Armitage was a great collector of insects
