Diana of the Uplands, 1903-1904, (1935). Portrait of Dame Katharine Furse (nee Symonds, 1875-1952), wife of the painter, as Diana, goddess of the hunt. Furse was founder of the English Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), and served as director of the Womens Royal Naval Service (WRNS) - equivalent to the rank of rear admiral - during the First World War.
