Design for the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow, USSR, c1931-c1933. Artist: Alexander Karra
Design for the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow, USSR, c1931-c1933. The Palace of the Soviets was intended to be an administrative complex and conference hall, which was planned to be built on the former site of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, which was demolished by the Communist authorities in 1931. A competition to design the building was staged between 1931 and 1933, and was won by Boris Iofan. Construction began in 1937, but stopped when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 and was never resumed.
