Darius the Great Opening the Tomb of Nitocris, 17th century. The third king of the Achaemenid dynasty, Darius I (550-486 BC) ruled the Persian Empire from 522 BC until his death. Nitocris was a queen of Babylon. According to Herodotus, Darius opened her tomb expecting to find treasure, but only discovered an inscription reproaching him for his greed.
