Cheapside, Cross and Conduit, 1638, (1809)

Cheapside, Cross and Conduit, 1638, (1809). The procession of Marie de Medici along Cheapside in the City of London, part of the French Queens visit to King Charles I and her daughter Henrietta Maria. Here her entourage passes the Cross (centre) and the Conduit (seen on the right). The Cheapside Cross was one of the Eleanor crosses, a series of twelve stone monuments topped with tall crosses, erected between 1291 and 1294 by King Edward I in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile. The Great Conduit was a man-made underground channel which brought drinking water from the Tyburn to the City. On Cheapside there was a building where citizens could draw water
