Charles Lavigerie, French clergyman, 1869. Lavigerie (1825-1892) was appointed Archbishop of Algiers in 1866, and was later made primate for the whole of equatorial Africa by Pope Pius IX. In 1874 he founded a missionary order, the Societe de Missionnaires d Afrique, known as the Peres Blancs (White Fathers). Made a cardinal in 1882, Lavigerie devoted the later years of his his life to campaigning for the abolition of the slave trade in Central Africa.
