Charing Cross and the Strand, London, c1910. Charing Cross Station and Hotel looking north-east down the Strand. In the courtyard is the Eleanor Cross, with a bureau de change on the right. The Cross, erected in 1865, is a replica of the original which was demolished in the 17th century. The Eleanor crosses, a series of twelve stone monuments, were put up c1291 by King Edward I in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, who died in 1290. Postcard. [Celesque Series, Photochrom Co Ltd]
