Castel Sant Angelo, Rome, Italy, 1927. Artist: Eugen Poppel
Castel Sant Angelo, Rome, Italy, 1927. The cylindrical building was built in the 2nd century by the Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for him and his family. Originally known as the Mole of Hadrian, it was converted into a fortress in the 5th century, after which it became known as the Castel Sant Angelo. Hadrian also built the bridge over the Tiber leading to the mausoleum, the Ponte Sant Angelo, known in his day as the Pons Aelius (Aelian Bridge).
