Captain MacDowell, DSO, and Cadet Mullin, two Canadian VCs, World War I, 1914-1918. Stereoscopic card detail. An officer in the 38th (Ottawa) Battalion, Thain Wendell MacDowell (1890-1960) won his VC with his actions at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. He had previously been awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order) at the Somme the previous year. George Harry Mullin (1892-1963) served with Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry Regiment. He won the Military Medal at Vimy Ridge and was awarded the VC for single-handedly capturing a German pillbox at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917
