Captain Cameron and the other Abyssinian Captives, c1864. Captain Charles Cameron, British Consul in Ethiopia, (far right), and others were taken prisoner by the Abyssinian emperor Tewodros II on 3 January 1864. Cameron, his European staff, and four missionaries were kept in chains for over two years. Shown here are: Kerans, Rassam, Stern, Prideaux, Mr & Mrs Rosenthal and Child, Blanc, Pietro and Cameron. Their capture led to the British Expedition to Abyssinia. Engraving after a photograph. Published in " Illustrated Battles of the Nineteenth Century.
