The Old Signs Have Come Back To Lombard Street, c1935. Creator: W Whiffin
The Old Signs Have Come Back To Lombard Street, c1935. Signs in Lombard Street in the City of London, erected for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. The signs had previously been removed, as they occasionally caused injuries or fatalities if they fell on pedestrians. Lombard Street, one of the main Roman roads of Londinium, was granted to goldsmiths from Lombardy in northern Italy in the 13th century, and was the origin of Londons banking and financial district. From " Wonderful London, Volume 1", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]
