Canonbury Tower, an Old Manor House Turned into a Social Club, c1935. Canonbury Tower in Islington, north London, once formed part of a manor house of the Priors of St Bartholomew. The Tower itself dates from the mid 16th century. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries it was acquired by Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London, who added the two wings. Sir Francis Bacon leased the building in the 17th century, and playwright, dramatist poet and novelist Oliver Goldsmith lived in the tower during the 1760s. From " Wonderful London, Volume 2", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]
