Burning of Naworth Castle - from a drawing made on the spot, 1844. We regret to record the destruction by fire of this most perfect and interesting of the Border Castles...situated in the parish of Brampton, at a distance of eleven miles north-east of Carlisle...the baronial residence of the Lords of Gilsland, and a seat of the Earl of Carlisle. The distressing intelligence of the fire reached Carlisle...and it was soon confirmed by the ominous smoke that rose from the hills beyond Brampton, amidst which the castle was beautifully situated, on elevated ground, overlooking the Vale of Irthing. A special train was immediately despatched from the station of the Newcastle line, conveying the powerful fire-engines of this borough, with a suitable force of policemen, and in less than an hour after the alarm had reached Carlisle, the engines had arrived at the scene of destruction.
