Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, 1859

Britannia-the Unprotected Female!!, November 26, 1859. Rumours of the invasion of Britain by France abounded. Mr Punch agreed that preparations were being made for self-defence and approved the notion that the English fleet should exceed the united fleets of France and Russia. Furthermore, continuing efforts to improve recruitment to the volunteer force should be made. The French may consider Britannia to be an unprotected female, but this cartoon presents a truer picture. Britannia is depicted as a muscle-bound and vigorous man, seated on the edge of a cannon and with a gun in one hand, and a sword in the other. He has a shield resting against his thigh and the British bulldog at his feet. There are bayonets to suggest other troops at his shoulder and at the bottom right, another cannon. His keen eyes are looking out over the Channel towards France and his whole demeanour suggests that he is ready and able should the French attempt any offensive. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 26, 1859
