The Boyhood of Raleigh, 1908-1909
The Boyhood of Raleigh, 1908-1909. Sir Walter Raleigh (1554-1618) was a famed English writer, poet, courtier and explorer. He was responsible for establishing the first English colony in the New World, on June 4, 1584 at Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina. When the third attempt at settlement failed, the ultimate fate of the colonists was never authoritatively ascertained, and it became known as The Lost Colony. From Penroses Pictorial Annual 1908-1909, An Illustrated Review of the Graphic Arts, volume 14, edited by William Gamble and published by AW Penrose (London, 1908-1909)
