Battle of Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485 (1864). Artist: James William Edmund Doyle

Battle of Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485 (1864). Richard III (1452-1485), last Yorkist king of England from 1483, on a white horse. Richard was killed on the battlefield and the crown passed to the Lancastrian champion, Henry Tudor (1457-1509) who, as Henry VII, became the first Tudor monarch of England. Bosworth was the decisive battle in the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487), the struggle between the houses of York and Lancaster for the throne of England. From The Chronicle of England by James William Edmund Doyle. (London, 1864)
