Battle of Alnwick, Northumberland, 1174, (1864)

Battle of Alnwick, Northumberland, 1174, (1864). Victorian depiction of the capture of William I of Scotland, The Lion (1143-1214) by the English. William inherited the Earldom of Northumbria in 1852, but was forced to renounce the title to Henry II of England in 1857. After William became King of Scotland in 1165 he fought to regain Northumbria from the English. In 1174, leading an army in support of a revolt by Henrys wife and sons, William was captured at Alnwick. He was allowed to return to Scotland in return for acknowledging Henry as his feudal superior
