Arrest of Alice Lisle for sheltering fugitives from the Battle of Sedgemoor, 1685, (c1864)
Arrest of Alice Lisle for sheltering fugitives from the Battle of Sedgemoor, 1685, (c1864). Lady Alice Lisle (1617-1685) was executed for harbouring fugitives after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion at the Battle of Sedgemoor. She was the last woman to be beheaded in England. She is seen here in a 19th century imagining of the scene, with a determined expression on her face, while a young woman pleads on her knees with a soldier. In the background are Richard Nelthorpe and John Hickes who she was sheltering, and who were also executed. From the collection of D.Price.Esq
